"Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" is a salient religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Prophet Abraham’s love towards his son was as strong as his faith in Allah. He decided to sacrifice his own son on the altar at the mount of Mina near Mecca.

His heart went numb but reciting the name of Allah, he raised the sharp sword as he divided the head from the body. He could not believe his eyes. His son Ismail was standing hale and hearty in front of his eyes. A dead ram (a male sheep) with his head apart was lying in the pool of blood. On finding him obedient and prepared to act on his command, Allah submitted a ram for him to slaughter instead of his beloved son. Prophet Abraham emerged as a winner as he accepted god’s challenge with complete faith.
The virtue of the verse of the Holy Quran proves the virtue of this parable:

"And to every nation we have appointed acts of devotion (sacrifice) that they may mention the name of Allah on what He has given them of the cattle quadrupeds; and your God is one God, therefore to Him should you submit, and give good news to the humble whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and those who are patient under that which afflicts them" – Holy Quran, Chapter 22: Verse 34

The animal sacrificed symbolizes the beast in man which needs to be killed as an act of righteousness in the cause of the Absolute Being – the Supreme Creator of the universe.
